Okay, so these didn’t turn out as beautifully as the picture of them that I found on Pinterest. I believe that’s what the call a “Pinterest Fail.” But dammit if they weren’t delicious. My son Tyler loves fruit, so for a little mini treat in the middle of the day before he had his birthday cake, I made these little guys. Of course, because I was stressing about everything, I had a few problems in the process. But, like I said, they way they looked didn’t change the taste.
First thing I did was freeze a bunch of bananas. I put them all in a freezer bag (peeled) the night before his party so they would be ready to go. Since it was just the three of us for his party, I only used two bananas. My husband cut off the tops so that they could stand up on their own and so the whipped cream and cherry could sit on top.

While my husband was busy cutting the bananas and taking shitty pictures, I was at the stovetop boiling water in a pot with a Pyrex bowl on top (my own makeshift double boiler). I put a bag of semi-sweet chocolate chips in the bowl with about a tablespoon of vegetable oil just to help it smooth out.
I continued stirring the chocolate with a wooden spoon until it was completely melted.
Here’s where the trouble started. When the chocolate was melted, I attempted to dip the bottom quarter or so of the bananas into the chocolate. However, when I tried to do this, the chocolate wasn’t sticking very well to the bananas. It was like the bananas were so cold and the chocolate was so hot that it just wouldn’t stick. Plus, while I was holding each banana, the heat from my fingers would start to unfreeze the banana and so it would start to get mushy and slip out of my hand. Whatever. Anyway, I dipped them as best as I could and then dipped the chocolate part into these colorful nonpareils that look like the colors from Toy Story (because Tyler loves the shit out of some Toy Story)! Finally, I topped them with a little Reddi Whip and some maraschino cherries and boom! Frozen banana sundae treats for my kick-ass kid.
Look at that face! How can I be mad that these looked crappy when Tyler thinks they are the coolest things he’s ever seen and devours them with a smile? Maybe with some practice I’ll get better at these, but I’m not too worried about it. But if you all try them out, let me know any tips you have for making them turn out better.
So, for those of you who have never tried it, good for you! Stay away…save yourself! Pinterest is this place where you get so many awesome ideas for pretty much every aspect of your life that most people just don’t have the time to ever follow through on. Well, I was getting sick of pinning all these awesome ideas and having them just sit there on my boards collecting metaphorical dust. So I thought I’d try one out. I had pinned something from a blog that basically said I could make 40 freezer crock pot meals in 4 hours and only spend a little over $200. Well, that backfired horribly. Okay, so maybe I didn’t plan it the best that I could have, but my husband and I came up with a pretty good system of writing down all the ingredients for the shopping list. My first mistake was letting him do the shopping alone. As every woman knows (or should know), men aren’t the best at shopping or following instructions, so his trip was broken up into several trips to several different stores. All told, we ended up spending about $400, way more than said blogger quoted. But I figured if it successfully made 40 meals and we weren’t spending extra money on going out to eat because “there’s nothing easy to make at home” then we were still saving money.
So now I had my ingredients and I put my son to bed so all that was left to do was prepare my freezer bags with labels and start chopping some vegetables and meat and measuring random ingredients. She made it seem so simple. ” I just chopped all the veggies I would need for all the recipes, then all the meat, and then eyeballed the rest of the ingredients, and bam! 40 meals ready to go!” Sounds easy enough, right? Cut to 4:30am…I am covered in beef stew because of a Ziploc bag malfunction, I only have about half of the recipes finished, and my freezer is completely full with no room left for the rest of the meals that I still have left to make. Then I am awakened at 7:30am by my 2-year-old son who doesn’t care what time Mommy went to bed. He just wants to drink some juice and watch Toy Story for the billionth time. Ah, what a nice and relaxing morning, right? You wouldn’t expect to suddenly have a kitchen that has an overwhelming smell of garlic because you fell asleep on the couch for 5 minutes and your two-year-old found the garlic powder that you left out in the kitchen and proceeded to empty the whole bottle onto the floor. Awesome. Thanks, blogger. Now I feel like a complete failure. I don’t believe for one second that she did all this in only 4 hours all by herself with her two kids pulling at her hip the whole time. I am convinced that she is just writing these “helpful” blogs to make other people feel bad about themselves. That is cyber bullying, lady, and I WILL NOT stand for it. So if you are a blogger trying to give people tips about how to make their lives simpler, you’re probably doing more harm than good. Now go back to being a master chef while sewing all your children’s clothes and running your own jewelry business out of your immaculately clean house. Bitch.
I, on the other hand, will not blatantly lie to you, my faithful followers, about “how simple it was” for me to complete this restaurant quality dish in my own home while my son is screaming in the background about how he needs more Goldfish crackers “RIGHT NOW PLEASE!!!” I can’t bring myself to do it. I am a realist and I know that most people (especially those with young children) are too tired to make anything more than the Macaroni & Cheese that their kids are begging them for and usually end up eating the leftovers straight out of the saucepan. We’ve all been there, am I right? (Please agree, otherwise I have some serious restructuring of my life to do.) It’s hard to get a complex, delicious meal on the table most nights. But I absolutely LOVE cooking REAL food that takes time and several different pans and utensils and doesn’t come out of a box. So I started this blog to force myself to cook more and, more importantly, to KEEP TRACK of the recipes that I come up with on the fly and then forget to actually write down.
